Testing wallet payments on supported devices

Test a wallet in the device and browser combinations where customers can actually use it.

Test wallet payments only in device and browser combinations supported by the payment provider and wallet. A button visible in one staff member’s browser does not prove that every buyer sees or can complete the same flow.

List eligibility before testing

Build a test matrix with the payment provider, domain setup, wallet, device, browser, card and product type. For Shopify’s online-store Apple Pay flow, the provider must support Apple Pay, the store domain needs SSL, and customers must use Safari on a compatible Apple Pay device. Subscription purchases add requirements: Shopify Payments, a Mastercard or Visa, and a compatible subscription app; private-store access blocks digital subscription purchases.

Apple Pay support includes nearly all iPhone models, Apple Watch, iPad and MacBook. For online checkout, test only device and browser combinations confirmed by the store’s compatibility requirements.

Before a real wallet flow, add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet and complete issuer verification if requested. Google Wallet’s add-card flow can scan the card or accept details entered manually.

For Google Wallet tap-to-pay, test an Android phone that supports NFC, is certified and meets security requirements. Unlock it before paying. Samsung Wallet is available only on Samsung devices, so include it only where the payment provider and checkout offer it.

For Shopify’s online Apple Pay checkout, use Safari on a compatible device. For other browser and device combinations, use only those the payment provider lists as supported; success in Safari does not establish support elsewhere.

Apple Pay end-to-end testing needs access to a physical device that can interact with secured screens, including passcode prompts. Do not treat a simulated screenshot as proof that a payment completed.

Use the payment provider’s documented test path. Judopay API payments or pre-authorisations can carry a token from an Apple Pay session or a payment token generated by the Google Pay API.

Judopay recommends a production environment and live cards for successful Apple Pay and Google Pay DPAN end-to-end tests. Wallet decline scenarios cannot be tested in its sandbox, and Judopay recommends a unique wallet payload for each test because production payloads can be used only once.

For an in-store Google Pay test, make a low-value transaction on a supported NFC terminal and check that transaction notifications are generated.

  2. Add card to Apple WalletUse iPhone or iPad to add card manually or via scan
  3. Use Safari on compatible deviceDo not use Chrome or Edge – Apple Pay is not supported outside Safari
  4. Complete payment using Face ID or fingerprintVerify passcode prompt and biometric authentication flow
  5. Check order confirmation and emailMatch final amount with transaction record

Include failure and fallback

Start from the product and cart, then try the express button and the wallet option inside checkout where available. Before confirming, check the shipping address, rates, tax, discount and final amount; change the address in the wallet and verify that the store recalculates correctly.

With Apple Pay, the customer taps or clicks the button and uses a fingerprint or Face ID; the device sends payment information to the provider without the customer manually entering card or shipping details. After a successful test, check the confirmation email and order record against the final amount.

Test cancellation, an unavailable wallet, failed authentication and return to the ordinary card form. The buyer should keep the cart and should not receive duplicate orders.

Record which provider, domain, wallet, device, browser, card and product combinations were exercised, and which were not. Do not claim universal support from a vendor logo or simulated screenshot.
